Lowndes County sits on I-75 in south Georgia, near the Florida border. It was created in 1825 and named for South Carolina congressman William Jones Lowndes. The first county seat was Troupville. In 1858 the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad announced a route that bypassed it. Valdosta grew up on that line, four miles south, and was incorporated in 1860. The county seat moved to Valdosta. Hahira lies to the north and Lake Park to the south. The county covers 496 square miles of land. It had 122,867 residents in July 2025, up 3.9% from 2020 (Census).

Two school districts serve the county. Lowndes County Schools had 10,728 students, with seven elementary, three middle and one high school (NCES, 2022-23). Valdosta City Schools had 8,291 students, with five elementary, two middle and one high school (NCES, 2022-23). Valdosta State University enrolled 10,435 students in fall 2025. It welcomed 3,729 new students in fall 2026, including 1,609 freshmen. South Georgia Medical Center lists 2,700 workers on the city's employer list. Wild Adventures in Clyattville is a theme park that opened in 1996. Hahira holds its Honey Bee Festival each year. The mean commute to work is 19.5 minutes (Census ACS, 2020-2024).
Moody AFB (8,000 military and civilian personnel), South Georgia Medical Center (2,700) and VSU (2,467) top the City of Valdosta's employer list.
